LON Gallery is thrilled to present a new project by Sarah CrowEST, Segni del Tempo, a conceptual sequence of textile works exploring the politics of a piece of cloth.
Sarah remarks of the project:
“Each piece is numbered according to the sequence of making and each number is preceded by a currency symbol. In this iteration I have used the Euro since they were produced during an artist residency at the textile laboratory Lottozero in Tuscany, Italy.
This series is made with heavy, antique linen with signs of times past. Each piece has screen printed marks, sublimation transferred pigments, digital embroidery, foil print, machine stitching, some have hand-stitched elements (both ancient and recent), hand-printed labels and digitally woven labels for provenance. The surface appearance, colours, materials and processes were all contingent upon where I found myself in Italy and constitute a response to conditions.
The cloth is be valued because, after all, to form a Dub Freight piece flax is grown, harvested, undergoes retting, storing, breaking, scutching, hackling, spinning, weaving, surface processing, shipping then many directions of use. Eventually the linen is recycled then comes cutting, hemming, labeling, printing, painting, foiling, embroidery, ironing, showing and maybe posting before it begins a new life.”
