Panayiota Peta Petrakis & Ryan Hancock, For and Against Classicism

The exhibition For and Against Classicism brings together the work of Peta Petrakis and Ryan Hancock. Their practices, working across painting and ceramics, offer a departure from classicism, critiquing the art historical and cultural expectations of each medium. Petrakis and Hancock exploit symbolic ambiguity and material malleability to free their work from rigid frameworks. For Petrakis, the mono-hued abstraction of her practice draws from ancient Greek motifs to examine personal histories and contemporary visual culture. For Hancock, the comic manipulation of clay subverts traditional ceramic conventions, resulting in painterly works riddled with satire and dark humour.
