Adam John Cullen, Itanos

The exhibition comprises a suite of new works and textiles which extend the artist’s recent project Glean, conceived whilst on residency at Yellow Brick Studios in Athens, Greece.

Extending these ideas, Itanos explores how artworks can communicate personal narratives through the incorporation of found and collected materials. Cullen’s idiosyncratic process of fossilising these materials inside urn-like vessels alludes to a process of personal archaeology; where his narratives are buried, excavated and recontextualised through a method of chiselling, eroding and re-casting. Comprising a gamut of sculptural material, items of personal significance and symbolism; such as textiles collected on holiday in Thailand, leadlight windows gleaned from a share house the artist used to live in, family heirlooms and gifts from friends, all imbue a profoundly personal logic to explore notions of fragmented memory, absence, grief and the domestic.
