27 July–20 August 2022
LON Gallery is delighted to present Root, Hog, or Die, Simon Zoric’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, on view July 27 – August 20.
Root, Hog, or Die, which takes its title from an early 1800’s idiom for self-reliance, features six sculptural works of cat litter trays. The trays, scoops and cat faeces are all cast in aluminium and painted with seductive, high gloss automotive paint. Continuing this logic, Zoric replaces the kitty litter with semi precious stones, crushed and arranged to mimic the popular cat litter product made from silica gel crystals.
These objects, which Zoric describes as “the last thing anyone wants in their home” were chosen specifically for their lack of desirability. Through a considered colour selection (primary colours, polychromed, monochromatic etc.) Zoric is attempting to grapple with his own complicated relationship to formalism, his desires to be a ‘commercially successful’ artist and to humorously emulate the ‘proven’ strategies and formulas used to conceive artworks by the world’s most desired and famous artists.
