1 February–25 March 2023
ON is thrilled to present Casey Jeffery’s third solo show with the gallery, ‘Recall’, on view between 1 – 25 February.
Comprising a suite of new paintings which mine the artist’s intimate histories; uncovering discrete images bound by family, place and psychological space.
Jeffery employs narrative and deeply personal subject matter as a conduit to communicate the more widely universal themes of migrant histories and the psychology of the post war suburban Australian vernacular.
Often occupying space between figuration and abstraction, these paintings employ trompe l'oeil methodologies, which speak both to the history of painting, as well as the complex and rich symbolism imbued in the fabrics, personal artefacts and scenes which they depict. The textiles that appear in Jeffery’s works are largely heirlooms, passed down to her, by her Nonno, a first generation Italian post war migrant, who settled in suburban Melbourne in 1951.
Jeffery’s paintings imbue the resolutely human tendency of projecting personal symbolic value onto objects, a particularly pertinent concept when viewed through the lens of migration and displacement. It is in this zeitgeist that Jeffery’s picture making gains its potency, where painted memories become preserved for infinite contemplation.
